An Amtrak train headed to Chicago rammed into a semitrailer filled with 70,000 pounds of bacon Friday afternoon, leaving behind a mangled mess of metal and pork product.
No serious injuries have been reported from the crash, which occurred at a crossing about 60 miles southwest of Chicago in Wilmington.
The collision overturned the truck and sent its cab flying to the opposite side of the tracks, separating it from the broken trailer. The truck’s contents, which included the bacon, according to NBC Chicago, spewed out alongside the tracks as passengers from the train crowded the scene at Route 53 and River Road. Broken boxes littered the train tracks Friday afternoon as authorities investigated the scene.
There were 203 passengers aboard the train, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said. None of the train cars, which had left Thursday from San Antonio, had derailed due to the accident. About 10 ambulances responded to the accident.
